REQUEST #2: Home Page Tweaks

by JP Obbagy on October 2, 2011

We received some fantastic feedback from Request #1 on the home page designs and, if you have not already done so, you can see our summary and response.

All comments were taken into consideration. Design #3 was chosen for the base template, but with some considerable modifications courtesy of everyone’s thoughtful insight.

Tweaking the Home Page

This feedback request revolves around some more subtle differences a single design. The two options below contain slight differences. On top of your general feedback, we’ve posted five specific questions to help guide the process. Don’t pull any punches…we want to hear the bad along with the good.

Design #3, version 1

Version #1

Design #3, version 2

Version #2

Questions:

  1. In the main navigation bar (SOLUTIONS, INBOUND MARKETING PRIMER, etc) do you like the look of ‘ALL-CAPITALS’ or do you prefer ‘Title Case’?
  2. Under “Learn More” have a look at the calls-to-action text for “Services, Contact Us, Follow Us” – does the colour contrast enough for you to notice or does it look washed out?
  3. At the top of Versions 1 & 2 the contact and follow information is presented differently. Which style do you think is easiest to understand:
    • Version #1 with all purple
    • Version #2 with the traditional colours for social media buttons
    • Would you prefer something else?
  4. For the 3 service pillar columns (Getting Found, Converting Traffic, Local Search) which style do you prefer:
    • Graphics in-line with the titles (Version #1)
    • Graphics below titles with text beside? (Version #2)
  5. Is the font size large enough for the content in the main body of the 3 service pillars?
  6. General comments and feedback – tell us like it is!

Timeline: Your feedback comments are requested by 7:00 am Pacific Time on Tuesday, Oct. 4th so we can update our designers. Thanks.

My feedback is past the deadline, but for what it is worth:

Overall, cleaner design. Still a little wordy in the middle of the page.

1. All capitals is clear – good font choice.
2. Learn More section does need to be brought out more – the call to action gets washed out. If you are asking your clients to act on your page, you want the call to action links to be more prominent.
3. I like how the contact / Facebook / Twitter information at the top is noticeable and punches out in version 1. I don’t think you need to use the traditional icons (unless there is a requirement to do so).
4. Version 1 of Getting Found / Conversion / Local Search is definitely cleaner. I like how the icons are separate (above) the written text.
5. The text size is too small for the 3 pillars on the main page.
Like your business model, you want to entice clients to click through to your next page(s) to find more detail – so you should not need too much detail on your home page.

One other consideration is you have “Contact Us” on three areas on the page (top banner, Learn More, and bottom panel). You don’t need it in three spots on the home page.

Cheers,
- Doran

Just generally- I find both options quite a bit too busy. I find it kind of shocking- but I think my attention span is getting shorter- maybe it’s living with Robertson for 20 years… To be honest I just don’t read that much on website front pages- I move on pretty quickly. I read headers only if I’m brutally honest- so I didn’t get past the those. Strangely enough I spent most of the summer looking at a lot of social media sights and small business online business sights- you guys are offering some great services. It seems like you have a lot of quick links- which is nice for your customers maybe but offers them a lot of opportunities to get distracted from converting into paying customers for you. Something to consider.

Good morning!
1. All Caps
2. Not washed out
3. Version #2, it’s more credible and more quickly recognized.
4. Version #1 graphics in line with title. More crisp and less reading required, but I agree graphics maybe looking a little too cartoonish.
5. Bigger font and less words.
6. Overall I think font and color helps with a clean look. I like the balance of the green bands at top and bottom of the page.
The site has lots of potential but I find the repetition of tabs and tag lines contributes to clutter and risks the reader feeling that they are wasting their time reading the same options over again. It’s as if you are afraid the reader isn’t going to get the message so the message is repeated throughout. ie. Traffic that converts/Converting traffic = 4 times; Getting found/Get found locally = 3 times; Contact Us = 3 times, Learn More = 2 times.
It would be nice to see something more personal about your company as well. Good luck guys, it’s looking good!

1. ALL CAPS
2. Too washed out
3. Traditional colours, definitely.
4. At first I preferred version 1, but I like the colours in the icons on version 2 a lot better.
5. Maybe a bit small.
6. Somehow I find the text easier to see in version 2, but prefer the overall aesthetic of version 1.

Q1 & Q4: Both are legible and clear. I don’t have preference for the Q1, but I found the graphic-in-line-with-titles more pleasing for Q4.

Q2: I don’t see much problem with the color/constrast, but I wonder why there is a learn more blue button just above, then the green on white learn more menu with some subheading which repeat information already on that page (namely contact at the bottom, follow us at the top, and services – isn’t that what the rest of the page is about??).

I think it could be improved by removing duplication, either by getting rid of the button/section altogether, or putting link to different information (i.e. who we are, satisfied clients)

Q3: I like the original button better. Easier to identify and add a bit of colours.

Q5: I think the size is ok, but your font is a bit bitmap-ish – reminds me of computer using DOS in the ’90′s. Is this on purpose? Have you considered using the same font throughout? If font change, then you may have to change font size too.

Other comments:
- Will there really be two columns of quick links? I’m not sure – since both columns have the same information, it could be a space filler. If it’s the case, can I suggest reducing it to one column at most (pick the most important/relevant ones), otherwise it defeats the purpose of “quick” in quick links.

- The spiralling staircase graphic in the top green bar is better thant the previous box of internet navigation software – it subtlely suggest the increase profit everyone will get from using your services – but it still fill to me like a generic-downloaded graphic, rather than something truly unique to Relevance Path. If short on time and resources, I would leave it, but otherwise maybe consider (1) something more personal to your company, (2) nothing, (3) a streaming of pictures/narratives showing various aspect of your offer.

- I’m not crazy for some of the actual graphics beside your titles (the one discussed in Q4). Not that awful to put a stop on the launching the whole website, but they feel generic (as in from a photo bank of graphics for your everyday needs).

The first two on option #1 are not bad, but the last one is (cartoon map and magnifying glass). Maybe try to stick to a visual theme (green or purple tone from your logo, more logo vs. more detailed, etc.)

Hope it helps

1. I have no problem with all-caps, but the individual tabs could look more distinct.
2. tough call. It’s a bit washed out, but I like that it matches the green above & I like that colour green a lot. Make it bolder only if you can preserve the colour link that makes it stand out.
3. I tend to like thick, bold type, but after comparing the two I like #2 with the crisper original colours better.
4. Definitely like the crisper font & arrangement of version #1.
5. Generally no, but in this case (where people will be clicking through to read more almost immediately after figuring out the title if they are interested) yes if it balances the page well.
6. For some reason the “E” from “LEARN MORE” is slightly faded in version #1.
